What Is Crepitus / Cracking Joints ?

Joint cracking, or crepitus, is a popping or crackling sound that happens when the tissues around a joint, like cartilage, tendons, or ligaments, rub together in an unusual way. It often occurs when air, fluid, or bones interact differently, causing the sound. Knee crepitus can be due to many different conditions, and the symptoms can vary. If air is trapped in soft tissues (like under the skin), it's known as "soft tissue crepitus," which is a more serious type. Crepitus caused by arthritis or joint issues can signal long-term problems like joint damage or chronic disease.
