Guillain-barré Syndrome
Guillain–Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a condition characterized by rapid-onset muscle weakness caused by the immune system attacking the peripheral nervous system. Typically, both sides of the body are affected. The initial symptoms often include changes in sensation or pain, usually starting in the back, along with muscle weakness. This weakness usually begins in the feet and hands, but can spread to the arms and upper body over time.
The symptoms of GBS can develop over hours to a few weeks. During the acute phase, the condition can become life-threatening. Approximately 15% of people with GBS may experience weakness in the breathing muscles, which may require mechanical ventilation.
Some individuals with GBS also experience changes in the autonomic nervous system, which can cause dangerous abnormalities in heart rate and blood pressure, potentially leading to further complications.
